ABOUT THE SCHOOL
Founded in 1923, Armenian Evangelical “Kenats” School in Damascus grew from modest beginnings into a stable primary institution, grounded in Christian values and responsible formation.
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
The Armenian Evangelical “Kenats” School in Damascus was founded in 1923 during the ministry of Rev. Karapet Hasesian. Its earliest classroom was a single large room where 40–50 students studied in crowded conditions, without proper flooring, using a few benches for both seating and as makeshift desks.
In 1924, the Evangelical community rented a larger house in the Abbara district, and the school moved with approximately 250 students. During this period, Rev. Saryan taught Bible studies, and the school principal was Mr. Tigran Mesropian. Between 1924 and 1953, the school was led by six principals, reflecting a growing and structured educational mission.
A major milestone was achieved in 1950. With the support of the Armenian Evangelical Community in Syria and dedicated local administration, the community secured its own school building, which remains the school’s campus today. This accomplishment took place under the leadership of Rev. Haroutiun Baleozian and through the initiative of Rev. Yenovk Hatidian, supported by around 50 Evangelical families.
After Rev. Baleozian’s passing, the school required a permanent director, and Mrs. Anoush Seropian assumed the role of principal until 1992. She strengthened generations through education rooted in Christian principles and Armenian identity, and she was honored with a distinction medal and the title of Veteran Principal.
From 1993 to 2019, the school had five principals. Today, it is directed by Mrs. Maysa Talap Shtevi, and is sponsored by the head of the Armenian Evangelical Community in Syria, Rev. Haroutiun Selimian.
